NORTHEAST (OHIO) RUNNING CLUB (NERC)
There are many good reasons as to why walkers and runners of all ages and abilities join local running clubs. Yet I was a runner in Mentor, Ohio for 15 years before joining the Northeast (Ohio) Running Club, which has served members from Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga counties since 1982. I was, and still am for the most part, a solitary runner. What I had not realized, as I do now, is that a local running club, such as NERC, is about so much more than running. Yes, NERC offers great opportunities for group runs, track workouts, running tips and education at monthly meetings, finding training partners, and a chance to compete in our Grand Prix Race Series. However, NERC is also a social club with fun running and non-running events, and lifetime friendships. In NERC I have found competition, friendship, inspiration, motivation, support, fantastic discounts on running shoes and gear, and a great sense of purpose and happiness in volunteering. So, in my third year as a NERC member, I find myself as President of the club with an agenda to inspire others as I have been inspired.
The NERC Board has been very busy in 2015 in making improvements for our members. Last year, we increased our communication of NERC activities through facebook and e-blasts. This year, we have added a President’s monthly communication, movie nights, a visit to the Lake County Crime Laboratory, a volunteer reward program, surveys of member wants, and launched a brand new web site with an expansive race and event calendar, functionality to record and compare race results, the ability to write blogs, and the ability to share posts and blogs on other social media. We are making a concerted effort to better serve our members and provide a ‘Big Tent’ for running in our small northeast corner of Ohio.
Whether you are a runner, walker, or just a fan of running events in northeast Ohio, or in some other location, I would encourage you to join your local running club; or, if you are already a member; become a more active participant in club activities, meetings and leadership. Will it help your running? For most of us, I would say yes, but it is about so much more than running.
