How Many Athletes are Needed for a Track & Field Team?

Written by Matt McGowan on 26 May 2017.

Is it time for the Ohio High School Athletic Association to reconsider how they determine if a high school has a track & field team?  The OHSAA requires a school to have 9 athletes entered in the District Track & Field Championships for them to count that school as having a team, even though one athlete can score in the District Championships giving that school a team score and a place in the District Track & Field Championship.  In 2015 a school with only 7 boys on their track & field roster won the State Championships, even though the OHSAA didn't recognized that school has having a track & field team.  There also have been a number of State Track & Field Championships won for their school even though they only had one athlete competing and scoring at the State Track & Field Championships.

Keeping Track

Written by Rod O'Donnell on 18 May 2017.

The experience of attending a distance camp is a very positive one for a runner and may provide benefits that will last a lifetime. One of the greatest of these benefits is the establishment of relationships with others from different programs that may have varied philosophies. They will be able to see how they train and thus will be better able to evaluate where their program can be strengthened. A runner may live in an area that produces few top-level competitors and, therefore, will not realize how many outstanding runners there are. By going to a camp that draws from a wide geographic area, the athlete soon realizes the depth of quality that exists in the sport. This excellence can be seen on a state-wide, regional, or national basis, according to the type of camp that they choose to attend.

On Being a RUNNER

Written by Richard Ferguson, Ph.D. on 18 May 2017.

If you’re reading RUNOHIO you’re probably a runner. You might just say you identify yourself as runner. When you make such a personal identity for yourself it’s really a form of social identification about what you love to do and how you want others to think of you. From the time you have spent running, maybe years or decades, you have developed confidence in running, gained much knowledge about running and met many people with very similar interests. Through your identity as a runner you gain motivation to continue to run, learn more about running and interact with others who share your love of the sport. Your friends are often runners, your family may be big supporters of your running and you may even have close relationships with a coach, trainer, or physical therapist.
