KEEPING TRACK, Two Iconic Coaches

As I sat down to write this month’s article, I had a topic and a plan to develop; however, that idea quickly changed when I learned that two iconic coaches had passed away – Pat Summit, the legendary women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, and Sam Bell, renowned former track coach at Indiana University.

The Overtraining Conundrum

You hear it all the time, “to be a good runner you must train hard”. “You must work hard and be dedicated to your training”. “You have got to be persistent and focused”.  All of the above statements are true. However, you also hear things like, “don’t train too much or you will get over trained”. Every time you complain the least bit about fatigue someone will say, “you must be over trained”. It’s enough to make any runner paranoid about the effectiveness of their training program. Are you training hard or are you “overtraining”?

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Taking Your Diet to the Next Level

Some runners are still on the “see-food diet”. They see food and they eat it. Others are a bit more mindful about how they nourish their bodies; they put thought into selecting high-quality foods that invest in good health, quick healing, and top performance. They commonly report they have taken their diets to the next level. For some disciplined and dedicated runners, the next level is a perfect diet with no sugar, no processed foods, no desserts, and no “fun foods.”

Fremont Elite Runners’ Club

The Fremont Elite Runners’ Club was started in 1978 by a group of avid runners of Fremont, Ohio to support and encourage one another as well as other local athletes in their journey for health and wellness. Each year FERC hosts numerous road races of varying distances and assists others with running events in Northwest, Ohio. This tradition has been passed on to the current club members who enjoy group runs, races, social events, and online support through the FERC Facebook page and website.

Jeff McGowan Memorial 5K – August 14th

on 13 July 2016.

Jeff was a 1983 graduate of Circleville High School and a 1990 graduate of Ohio University. Jeff set school records at Circleville High School in the 2.5 mile and 5km cross country events as well as in the 800 meters, 1600 meters and 3200 meters.
