On the Run with Matt McGowan

on 24 November 2017.

The USA Track & Field Annual Meeting will be held in Columbus, Ohio on November 29 - December 3.  RUNOHIO would like to welcome all officials and attendees. More on the USATF - http://www.usatf.org

Congratulations to the 2017 USATF Hall of Fame inductees: 2017: Leroy Burrell, Bryan Clay, Lindy Remigino, Patty VanWolvelaere-Weirich, Bill Squires.  -

The Bishop Watterson boys cross country team which I coach qualified for the OHSAA State Championships.  Four years ago the Ohio High School Athletic Association instituted combined enrollment for cross country where all other divisional assignments are based on  the school's gender enrollment.  With combined enrollment my school with 62% girls. the boys team was forced to run in  Division I even though 61 schools had more boys running in Division II.  The team was not ranked in the top 25 this year. After the Regional's the team was ranked 19th in State and the team finished 18th with one runner earning All Ohio honors.  Congratulations to everyone who competed.  RUNOHIO will have more on the Championships in the next issue.

Congratulations to everyone who ran a personal best this year.  Whether you ran a personal best in the 5km, 10km, half marathon or marathon or ran your first 5km or marathon – Great job!  Hopefully, if you were not able to run your best time, you had some great races this past year.  As the fall turns into winter, it is important to keep up your base training so next spring you will be healthy and fit and ready for another full season of racing opportunities.  Hopefully, the weather this year will allow you to get out and train...

I will be helping to direct the Arnold 5K Pump and Run and the Arnold 5K on March 4th. The Arnold 5K Pump and Run is the largest event of its kind in the country. (I can’t find a pump and run which does the lifting and running on the same day with more than 200 athletes) Registration for the event started November 1st and the limit of 1,000 athletes has been reached -  Athletes from 35 States, Washington D.C, and Canada have entered this eighteenth annual event. The race has a limit of 1,000 to allow for athletes to weigh in and lift before the race, which starts at 10:30am. If you would like to run the Arnold 5K, (run only) registration is still open.

As another year comes to an end and a New Year begins, one can always look back to numerous positive happenings as well as the sad ones we experienced. I am sure we all know people who had a tough 2016 either with their health or work situation. If you know someone having a tough time, maybe you can do something to make their life better. When you are making your New Year’s Resolutions, we hope you will consider volunteering at a local road race. If possible, help to sponsor a local race, help a new runner to understand proper training, and help your neighbor who might need some assistance. If we all do a few kind acts to help others nearby, I am sure 2018 will be a great year.

My mom, Jean McGowan, is still trying to recover from her stroke.  She use to help me to proof read RUNOHIO and put mailing labels on the publication.  Feel free to send her a card at Logan Elm Health Care Center, 370 Tarlton Rd, Circleville, OH 43113.

If you are directing a race in 2018, please send RUNOHIO your race information and/or an entry form as soon as you have the information available.
