e-NEWSLETTER

OCTOBER 2011

The cool fall weather combined with the fall foliage will make for some great running this month.  October is one of the favorite times of the year for many runners to train and race as the hot humid summer days give way to some of the best running conditions of the year.

Good luck to everyone getting ready for a fall marathon or another key race. Also, good luck to all of the cross country runners as they prepare for their League, District, Regional, State and National Championships.

I hope to see you at an upcoming race.

Matt McGowan

Galen Rupp shattered the existing 10,000-meter American record

25-year-old Galen Rupp shattered the American record for 10,000 meters by running 26:48.00 on September 16th in Brussels, eclipsing the 26:59.60 that Chris Solinsky set last year on May 1st. In getting the AR, Rupp finished third in the race, which was won by Kenenisa Bekele in a 2011 world-leading time of 26:43.16.

Rupp's 26:48.00 puts him very high on the all-time lists. He is now the 16th-fastest man in history at 10,000 and his 26:48.00 was the 29th-fastest 10,000 ever run in history. For comparison's sake, Chris Solinsky's old AR is only the 81st-fastest 10,000 ever run and Solinsky is now the 39th-fastest man in history.

Cross Country

The cross country racing season is underway. Good luck to all of the cross country runners as they prepare for their upcoming championships.

Good luck to everyone running a fall marathon, half marathon as well as all other distances. Hopefully, you will have good weather for your training and racing.

After a 25 year run at the Scioto Downs Racetrack the Ohio High School Athletic Association has decided to move this year’s November 5th High School Cross Country Championship to the Hebron’s National Trail Raceway. The Cross Country Championships has attracted up to 12,000 spectators each year while the event was being held at Scioto Downs. Even though a cross country race has never been held at the new site, OHSAA officials say they hope to have a course ready for this year’s event.

Life Lessons from Cross Country

Cross-country is a sport that teaches many life lessons that our current culture does not promote or fails to emphasize. These traits not only will help athletes perform better, but they will make their lives better, long after they have crossed the finish line for the last time. The following are examples of many of the life lessons that our great sport promotes: http://www.runohio.com/index.php/features/140-life-lessons-from-cross-country

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Protein and Athletes

Protein is a hot topic among athletes of all sports. They want to know how much protein they need, when they should eat it, what's the best kind of protein, and if they should buy sports drinks with protein. The purpose of this article to answer some of these questions and leave you with this message: While adequate protein is important in your sports diet, protein should take its place as the accompaniment to carbs (grains, fruits, vegetables) in each meal and snack.
