CAS Rules in Favor of IAAF, Denies Caster Semenya's Challenge

Caster Semenya's dominance of women's middle-distance running may be jeopardized by IAAF's new rules on testosterone levels in international competitions

On May 1st the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the IAAF's rules on lowering testosterone for women athletes at middle distances in international competition. The long-awaited decision denied the challenge by Caster Semenya, who argued that the rules are discriminatory and aimed at her personally. The rules apply only to distances from 400 meters to the mile (including 1500 meters). She recently won the 5000 meters in the South African championships.

The fiercely controversial CAS verdict has implications for women all across the world of women's sport.
