On the Run with Matt McGowan From mid July – September print RUNOHIO

on 26 July 2019.

With a couple of more months of hot weather running many athletes are looking forward to the fall with cooler temperatures. Don't forget to drink plenty of water before and after your runs. This is especially important during the hot and humid summer days.

There are a number of excellent races to test your fitness in the next few months. However, if on race day it is hot and humid take it a little easier and keep your PR efforts for a cooler day. A number of outstanding performances were turned in at 112th Boys and 45th Girls Ohio High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Also, a number of Ohio athletes excelled in their collegiate National Championships, especially Ashland University which won the NCAA Division II Men’s Track & Field Championships.   I have attended most of the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships over the past thirty – five years and it is great to see many of those athletes continuing their success at the National level.  Ohio has been strong in track and field on the National scene.

Next month many junior high, high school and college athletes will be gearing up for another cross country season.  Many consider cross country one of the purest sports. If not racing yourself, hopefully you will be able to watch an upcoming cross country race and cheer on these athletes.  I have been the boys and girls cross country coach where I teach for thirty-two years and look forward to good weather this season.  While in graduate school I started the Miami University Women’s cross country club and coached the team for four years and each year the club team finished fourth in the All Ohio Cross Country Championships, behind varsity teams from Bowling Green, Ohio State and Ohio University.  In 2007 RUNOHIO helped to sponsor a women’s post collegiate cross country team which won the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships at the Voice of America Park in West Chester and a year later (missing one of our top runners) finished fifth in Spokane.  Good luck to everyone running cross country this fall.

The All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships return to Cedarville University on September 28 following a year in Akron. https://yellowjackets.cedarville.edu/news/2019/6/21/mens-cross-country-cu-welcomes-friendship-all-ohio-in-2019.aspx

It amazes me to see the number of races now being held around Ohio. A number of communities have more than one race on the same weekend.  A lot of the races are memorial runs and many of those runs are for individuals who were very active in the running community.  Check out the RUNOHIO print race calendar.    http://runohio.com/index.php/events/calendar/july-2019

RUNOHIO is working with the Columbus Running Company to present the Jeff McGowan Memorial 5km to be held at the Columbus Scioto Audubon Metro Park on August 11th.http://runohio.com/index.php/features/1638-jeff-mcgowan-memorial-5k

I am also working with the Circleville Classic 5 Miler in Memory of Jeff and Jean McGowan to be held on October 19th.  Both races proceeds benefit scholarships in their memory.https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Circleville/CirclevilleClassic

RUNOHIO is also a supporting sponsor of the October 19th Jesse Owens Jog 2.62 mile fun run & walk. https://www.jesseowensjog.com

If you are not running a local race you might see if they need any volunteers to help.  As a race director I know every race could always use a little extra assistance to make the event better.

If you are directing a race please send RUNOHIO your race information and/or an entry form as soon as you have the information available.  http://runohio.com/index.php/features/1633-race-directors
