RUNOHIO June E-Newsletter

Date:
05/30/2008 - 14:18

image001.gifI hope we all take time to remember the brave men and women who gave their life for our freedom and safety on this Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.

Hopefully, you are able to spend time with family and friends during this Memorial Day.

Please feel free to forward this E-Newsletter to your running friends....

In the next few weeks the new RUNOHIO web site (www.runohio.com) should be up. Check out the new Running Network site at - http://www.runningnetwork.com/homepage

Next month will be a busy month for racing and me. A number of outstanding events will be held in Ohio and surrounding States.

The 101st Boys and 34th annual Ohio High School Track and Field Championships will be held at The Ohio State University Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium – June 6 and June 7th. This event is the largest high school track and field Championship in the country. Hopefully, you can attend this event which always has outstanding competition.

I will be helping to direct the 31st annual Columbus 10K on June 8th. This will be the 20th year that I have helped direct the race. Jim Jurcevich and the Columbus Running Company have agreed to take over the directorship next year. You can go to one of the three Columbus Running Company stores (http://www.columbusrunning.com) now thru June 7th to register and pick up your race packet. If you mailed in your entry form or register online – pack pick up will be available starting May 31st. For more information on the Columbus 10K go to –

At the end of June my brother, Jeff, and I will be covering the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Oregon. A number of Ohio athletes will be participating. If you ever get a chance to attend the Track and Field Trials I am sure you will enjoy it. It is my hope to do a daily blog with pictures from the Trials. Check back at the end of the month for more on the Trials - www.runohio.com

Four years ago at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Sacramento, California, 1964 Olympic 5,000 meter Gold medalist Bob Schul was discussing with me his desire to put together a DVD spotlighting some of the athletes who helped make distance running in the USA what it is today.

Bob's goal of producing a video of the top American distance runners for this era will take place during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Oregon this summer. He has created a web site spotlighting the athletes from the 1950's and early 60's - www.distancelegends.com .

A number of outstanding performances were turned in at the 23rd annual Jesse
Owens Track and Field Classic. In the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase Brian
Olinger won in a stadium record of 8:32.66 just missing the Olympic A
qualifying time by .66 seconds. The time is the second-fastest by an American
this year. Ohio State’s Jeff See brought the crowd to its feet in the men’s
1,500-meter as he darted to a new Jesse Owens Stadium record of 3:40.86 the
second-fastest time in Ohio State history. It also qualifies as an Olympic B
standard and is the sixth-best time in the country and the best in the Big Ten
and the MidEast region. Read more on this meet –

I am also putting the finishing touches on four summer cross-country fun runs to be held Thursday evenings at 7:15 p.m. at the Bryn Du property in Granville. The dates are July 12th - 3km, July 26th - 5km and August 9th - 5km. There are a number of great summer cross-country series throughout the state but there were none in the Central Ohio area so I started this series last year. I hope you will be able to attend a few of these runs and enjoy the Village of Granville afterwards.

The Running Network National Race Calendar

RUNOHIO is part of The Running Network, which is a group of thirty-three regional running publications with the goal of providing the most comprehensive source of information for grassroots runners. I try to update race results as often as I get them and I have someone who updates other information on the RUNOHIO site. A person who does it for the National site updates national information and you can access it from the RUNOHIO site. A new feature is The Running Network National Calendar, which allows race directors to easily post upcoming races. For more information on listing races on this web site go to: http://www.runohio.com or go to - http://www.rncalendar.com/creator/login.asp
