I introduced RUNOHIO at the 1988 Columbus Marathon and the first issue of RUNOHIO was printed in March of 1989. My younger brother Jeff and my mom, Jean McGowan, assisted with the start of the publication.
A number of difficulties have occurred since we started RUNOHIO, including my father Jim passing away the night of the Columbus Marathon Expo, Jeff passing in 2012 and my mom passing in 2018. March starts our 35th year serving the running community. If hope you will renew your subscription and if you are not a subscriber to the print RUNOHIO, I hope you will sign up this year. Spring is also a time when many new athletes start track & field. According to latest statistics from the National Federation of State High School Associations Track & Field is the number one participatory sport for high school girls for the eleventh year in a row and number two for high school boys. Make an effort to watch these athletes compete at one of the many local track & field meets. The Ohio High School Athletic Association State Track & Field Championships will be at OSU Jesse Owens Stadium June 2nd & 3rd.
This winter was been one of the nicest in recent years. Hopefully, you have been able to get in some training for the spring racing season as spring is also a good time to increase your mileage while enjoying the spring scenery. Hundreds of races are listed in this issue's Race Calendar for you to test your fitness. https://www.runohio.com/index.php/events

Tom Wagonseller and I plan to do one more Granville Bryn Du Summer Cross Country race, with the hope someone else will step forward to keep the event going. This summer will are doing one race. Nineteen years ago we held five races and have held fifty-seven summer cross country runs. https://www.runohio.com/index.php/news-features/news/383-granville-bryn-du-summer-cross-country-3k The Columbus Jeff McGowan Memorial 5K in Memory of Jeff and Mark Dempsey will be a virtual event - https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Columbus/jeffmcgowan5k
I am also hopeful someone will come forward to co-direct the 36th annual Circleville Classic 5 Miler this October.
In 1980 while attending graduate school at Miami University I directed my first race, after starting the women’s cross country team at Miami thru the Intramurals Department under the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. For four years I directed a 5km cross country event and a five miler in the fall to bring attention and raise money for the team. In the spring with Bob Stewart’s help I started the Red Brick Run 5K which is still being held. The team finished fourth each year in the All Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. It took over four years before the university made the team an intercollegiate team once the NCAA started sponsoring Women’s Championships.

I hope you see you at an upcoming race or track meet.
