Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  In 1971 Memorial Day became an official federal holiday.

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades and road races. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

RUNOHIO hopes you can enjoy the day with family and friends and remember the reason for this holiday.
